YA book about a girl that was sent away from her families plantation during the war and returns a stranger.?

I believe the war was WW2 and the country was Malaysia. She returns to the plantation and is a stranger to her father. There is a boy that stayed during the occupation and brought food to the people that were captured and kept in camps. This is a book I read in the early 90's and I think it was published way before then.
