Did Korea separate before or after the Korean War?

Unless the website is from a college, the internet can not be trusted as a legitimate resource (this site included). Korea was separated after WWII between the Republic of Korea (democratic peoples in the south supported by US forces), and the Communist Korean forces in the north (supported by the USSR). The DMZ did not exist until the war ended, but the two halves were essentially two separate countries.
